Baclayon: BAHANDI Heritage Walking Tour

The Heritage Walking Tour is an eco-cultural activity inspired by the Baclayon Ancestral Homes Association (BAHANDI) to promote and preserve not only the Baclayon ancestral houses, but also the heritage of the whole community.

The tour will give you the opportunity to explore, with a local guide, the towns historic treasures including the Baclayon Church, 17th century elementary school and Spanish bridges, as well as some beautiful examples of centuries old ancestral houses. The tour also provides refreshments of traditional Baclayanon delicacies, Txocolate (hot chocolate) and Broas (pastries) at a elegant table setting outside the church.

Along with the Heritage Walking Tour, BAHANDI also organizes a Homestay Program along with various cultural events, such as singing contests, music recitals and festivals.

Loon: Inang-angan

Made of coral stone blocks, this grand stairway of four flights and 174 steps was constructed under the direction of Fr. Antonio Yus, parish priest from 1847 to 1849, to improve contact between Napo (downtown) and Moto (uptown).

A fifth flight of 38 steps leads to the convent (now Sacred Heart Academy) at the back of the Our Lady of Light church. The promenade concludes in the old wharf popularly called Tulay where a visitor gets a majestic view of the sea, the mangrove areas and the mountains of Loon and Cebu across the Cebu Strait.

Loon: Church of the Nuestra Señora de la Luz

Established by the Jesuits in 1753, the Our Lady of Light Parish was ceded in 1768 to the Recollects who built the first stone church in the 1780s. The churches built in 1815, 1850 and 1853-54 were devoured by fire.

The present façade is believed to have survived the last one. This "Crowning Glory of Recollect Architecture" and "Queen of All Heritage Churches in Bohol" was constructed when Fr. Jose Garcia was parish priest from 1854 to 1890. Domingo de Escondrillas, director of public works in Cebu, drew the plans.

The extremely elegant Baroque facade of this biggest church edifice in the Visayas is the finest in Bohol. Consolidating the Moorish tendencies are the bas relief carving, wooden balusters guarding the bell tower windows, and the pointed roofs. The sophisticated architectural styles of the Baroque, the Moorish and the Plateresque are evident in the Corinthian columns and fine details of the lace-like capitals.

The painted ceiling of the interior, done by Reynante Francia in the 1930s, is perfectly in step with the tiled (now GI sheet) roof and the main "retablo" embellished with roundels in bas relief depicting scenes from the life of Mary.

Getting there

Loon is some 27.5 km north-west of Tagbilaran City, along the route to Tubigon. Visitors can catch a bus to Tubigon from the Integrated Bus Terminal in Tagbilaran and ask the driver to let them out in Loon.

Baclayon: BAHANDI Homestays

The Baclayon Ancestral Home Organization, also known as BAHANDI (meaning treasure in Visayan), is a neighborhood association comprised of the owners of 67 Spanish colonial houses in Baclayon. In 2002, BAHANDI formed to rally against a provincial road-widening program which set the houses for demolition. However, with considerable community organizing, protest, and support from the Ayala Foundation, the homes were spared from destruction.

To provide funds for the preservation of the heritage homes, some of which date back to 1853, and to maintain their stature against future infrastructure programs, many of the ancestral homes have opened themselves up as a homestay. The homestays provide guests not only with bed and breakfast, but also the rare opportunity to live amongst the Baclayon community and soak up the local culture.

Participating homestay houses are:

Baclayon: Python Prony

Photo: MJE Travel and Tour

The Philippines' largest captive reticulated python (Python reticulatus) or baksan in the native language, is found in Bohol. Prony, a female baksan named after its owner Sofronio Salibay, measures 27 feet (8.23 metres) and weighs more than 300 kg according to a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estimate.

If the measurement is indeed true, Prony is longer than Fluffy, current titleholder of Guinness Records 2011's longest captive snake. Fluffy, also a reticulated python, lives in Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell, Ohio, USA. When measured in 2009, she was found to be over 24 feet (7.23 metres) long.
